Ready to embark on your sailing journey? Join our Dinghy Sailing Course Level 1 and master the basics of boat handling, safety, and navigation. Perfect for beginners, this course will give you the skills to sail confidently and enjoy the thrill of being on the water.

This course is designed to equip participants with the foundational skills and knowledge necessary to sail a dinghy independently in light winds. Upon successful completion, participants will demonstrate competence in handling a dinghy safely and confidently.

Independent Dinghy Sailing: Sail a dinghy unaided in light winds with control and safety.

Collision Regulations: Understand and apply basic COLREGs principles.

Safety Equipment: Select and wear proper sailing attire, includingbuoyancy aids.

Boat Setup and Preparation: Rig, reef, and launch a dinghy efficiently for variousconditions.

Boat Balance and Control: Balance the boat by adjusting body weight and managing the mainsheet.

Sailing Maneuvers: Identify a reaching course and perform controlledturns and slaloms.

Speed Control via Mainsheet: Use the mainsheet to accelerate and decelerate on a reach.

Tiller and Sail Trimming: Control speed and direction using the tiller and sail trimming.

Close-Hauled Sailing and Tacking: Sail close-hauled and execute smooth tacks.

Running and Gybing: Balance the boat while running and perform controlled gybes.

Stopping the Boat: Stop the boat from various points of sail, including reach and run.

Towing Preparation: Prepare the boat and crew for safe towing.

Capsize Recovery: Recover a capsized dinghy and resume sailing.

Knot Tying: Tie key sailing knots like figure eight and round turn with two half hitches.

Weather and Aerodynamics: Interpret sailing forecasts and apply basic sail aerodynamics for efficiency.

Course Duration
  • 6 x 3 hour weekend sessions (3 Sat & 3 Sun)
  • Please note: You are eligible to request a replacement session for up to two sessions, should you be unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Customized sessions can be arranged
  • 6 participants to start the class

Prerequisites
  • Be able to swim at least 50 metres without the use of a personal floatation device
  • Between 12-18 years old OR weigh at least 40kg

Certification
  • Dinghy Sailing Level 1 Certification once completed the course
